Tamil Nadu Factory Registration is regulated through the Factories Act, 1948 to ensure that the facility is compliant with the regulations along with safety regulations. After registering the facility, Government of Tamil Nadu issues an official factory license. The license is a proof that grants permission to regulate and execute manufacturing activities from a specific location.


Factories Act, 1948

As per the Factories Act, any person who plans to build, extend or expand a plant in Tamil Nadu has to obtain the prior approval of the authority responsible in advance prior to the beginning of the operation.

The Factories Act is established with the aim of ensuring the establishment of appropriate safety measures and to improve the well-being and health of employees in factories. It also aims to stop the dangerous expansion of factories. For the Tamil Nadu Manufacturing Registration, and get an industrial license, you have to complete three steps:

  • Get approval to construct or extend the building to be used as an industrial facility
  • Registration of Factory
  • Obtain a license to operate under the Factories Act

Eligibility Criteria for Factory Registration in Tamil Nadu

Factories in where ten or more workers are employed using power used in the manufacturing process, and factories employing 20 or more employees without employing electricity in manufacturing processes must register under the Factories Act, 1948.

Anyone (Owner of the factory, or occupier) who wishes to build the extension or use any structure as an industrial facility in Tamil Nadu need to obtain a plan and approval to construct, expand or use any facility as an industrial facility. After the building is constructed, the owner or the manager needs to register the business in accordance with the Tamil Nadu Factories Act, 1948.
